Newly listed at the Ebay link at right – a great old antique wooden scoop candle holder.  One of my best finds – this handled wood scoop “hand lantern” is terrific!  Likely made around the turn of the 19th century or possibly very early 20th with original finish that is good and with wonderfully aged patina.  An early piece that shows its age and use wear in the exact places you’d expect.  The aged original hardware that is slightly inset and appears to be copper can be seen on the front of the scoop.

Early minimalist simplicity at its best.  The scoop shows great craftsmanship and design.  Made from deep, richly colored and richly grained thick solid wood.  The large-sized, thick original handle is large and bulbous shaped allowing for a good strong grip on the scoop as it was being used to light the way in the dark. Bottom corners are finished with a single wood dovetail.

This scoop is in wonderful vintage condition – no breaks or chips, even though it’s clear that it was definitely a working woodenware piece – possibly used as a community piece.  Large sized – over a foot tall with an overall length of 12 ½” from top edge to end of handle.  Width is 5 ½” across.  If the scoop is to be stored or displayed on the wall, there is a drilled hole for hanging.

With great antiques like this old beauty being increasingly hard to find, this scoop with attached wooden candle cup would be a fine addition for any collection.  An excellent piece for an Arts and Crafts, Mission, Utilitarian, Country or Primitive styled home.
