RONNIE BAKER BROOKS and LEON BLUE ~ What a performance!

RONNIE BAKER BROOKSCopy of rbb2 main

I was invited to a concert at the Railhead at Boulder Station (Las Vegas) where Ronnie Baker Brooks was headlining.   Although I was not familiar with his music, I was so glad I went!   What a show!   Excellent blues and some rock by Brooks…he can totally ROCK his Les Paul guitar.   The music was really outstanding and RBB is quite the showman.

After the show I had the pleasure of meeting Brooks – a very friendly, talented and personable musician.   You can find more info about Ronnie Baker Brooks and his band at  http://www.ronniebakerbrooks.com/band.html  – or go to  MySpace.com….just type in his name in the search box to see his profile, his tour info and to listen to his music.

There was also a guest performance by the legendary Leon Blue who I also visited with after the show.

To learn more about this great blues/jazz man…click the link shown below.

A small exerpt of the Leon Blue info found at the link provided:

Leon Blue (yes, that’s his real name!) may just be the finest blues piano man you’ve never heard of. Not that he hasn’t had more than his share of high profile gigs – lengthy spells with The Ike & Tina Turner Revue, Lowell Fulson, and Albert Collins to name just a few – it’s just that he’s spent most of his career as a sideman rather than out front in the spotlight. But the company he’s kept speaks volumes about his talent, professionalism and versatility as a musician.

Acts of Kindness (AOK) ~ Volunteer Projects in the Las Vegas area

My daughter told me about this organization and I just signed up today to become a member.   We hope to become involved in many of their worthwhile projects focusing mainly in the Henderson/Green Valley area.

This is a great opportunity to meet with other local people who are also interested in volunteer work.   The AOK group gathers to discuss and plan community service projects – and the end results really make a difference in the community!

AOK volunteers with many different charities and are always looking for more opportunities to help.   To get an idea of what this organization is all about, check out the calender at the link below where past, present and future efforts are shown.

Wedding Ideas and Options ~ Themed and Outdoor Weddings in Las Vegas

use for any LAS VEGAS
A Las Vegas wedding is not limited to indoors, there are several outdoor, off the Strip and even themed weddings for just about every couple who plan to get married in style.

You can hold your dream wedding anywhere in the great outdoors of Southern Nevada.   Take your pick from any of the rugged or elegant outdoor wedding venues.   You can have a mountain wedding without moving mountains.   Desert or Mountain weddings such as Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon or Mount Charleston are possible with little effort on your part.

If you are the romantic and serene type then you can choose from any of the various wedding locations in Las Vegas.   A Gazebo wedding with flowers everywhere would be refreshing especially during summer.   Lake Meade or Lake Las Vegas offer beautiful lakeside ceremonies as well as ceremonies on the water in Gondolas or luxurious yachts.

There are countless wedding options available to you.   Choose from several themed weddings, from the sweet ones to the wildest.

If you are the fun-loving and adventurous type you can opt for the Harley wedding theme where you and your better half come cruising down the aisle in individual Harleys with matching rock and roll music..

Or if you want something eerie then book a gothic-themed wedding complete with a spooky music coming from a hollow organ, a cemetery gate and you can even have Dracula as your officiating officer.   Vampire lovers will have the time of their lives with this theme wedding.

Want something literally out of this world?   Choose the space-themed wedding with your favorite Star Wars or Star Trek characters as guests. Or how about saying your wedding vows as the Queen of the Nile with matching sarcophagus and pyramid settings?   No less than King Tut can officiate the wedding for you.

If you have ever dreamed of becoming a true blue Royal blood then walk down the aisle as a princess with your court watching you every step of the way.   Or if you’re star-struck, get married with celebrity impersonators around you.

There are a lot of Las Vegas wedding themes and you can be as coy or as adventurous as you want to be.   The only limit, aside from your imagination of course, is your budget.

How Las Vegas Signs Were Created ~ Famous Welcome to Las Vegas Sign

To watch video – Link http://www.lasvegassun.com/videos/2008/jun/11/339/

lvsign

Legendary Las Vegas neon sign designer Betty Willis, known for her world-famous “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, talks about how she created her illustrious masterpiece and the significance of each of the sign’s various symbols.  (By Trent Ogle, Las Vegas Sun)

To read more about Willis and her “Welcome” sign, read John Katsilometes’ blog at the Las Vegas Weekly.

Some of the video topics include……..

– Willis’ favorite sign was the one atop the old Mint Hotel. “I remember flying back from Reno once, I’d fallen asleep and it was such a short flight, I woke up and saw that sign and said, ‘Wow! Reno has a Mint sign just like ours!’”

– The starburst at the top of the sign is a nod to Disneyland and Disney films, to promote happiness.

– She designed the Moulin Rouge sign with bold, swooping strokes to draw attention to the brazen ambition of the hotel, which catered to an African-American clientele when the Vegas casino scene was segregated. “I wanted to make it as impressive and as happy and as good as I could,” she said.

– The shape of the Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas sign was inspired by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company logo.

– Willis’ fellow designers tried to persuade her to write, “Keep Nevada Green,” on the sign’s back (which would be read by tourists, many of them who lost money at the casinos, as they left town). Willis argued for a more friendly send-off. “I didn’t think (Keep Nevada Green) was very nice,” she said. “Repeat business is always better.”

– The seven silver dollars that spell “Welcome” were chosen because they wanted the sign to look “lucky.”

– There are now three Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas-designed signs in the city: the original, the sign on Las Vegas Boulevard North that reads, “Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas,” and a third on Boulder Highway (or, the Boulder Strip) that marks the understood gateway from the Boulder Highway to Las Vegas. That sign stands just south of Sam’s Town and north of Tropicana Avenue and is several feet taller than the original.

– Willis has never trademarked the sign. “It’s my gift to the city,” she said. “People from all over the world ask about it.”

WANNA RE-LIVE WOODSTOCK? Groovy.

Downtown Vegas reliving groovy 1969 this summer

The Fremont Street Experience is paying tribute to 1969 all summer with free rock concerts, plenty of tie-dye T-shirts and peace symbols to trigger memories of a year many people say resonates with them to this day.

The bands expected were heavy hitters in the day _ Blood, Sweat and Tears, Three Dog Night, the 5th Dimension, Rare Earth, the Grass Roots and Canned Heat.

Organizers have hired John Van Hamersveld _ an artist recognizable for his movie artwork for “The Endless Summer” in 1966 and for the cover of the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” album in 1967 _ to paint two buses, one to be used as a stage.

Special video shows planned for a giant screen hanging over the street include a rolling-credits style memorial for the 58,000 Americans killed or missing in action from the Vietnam War.

The comprehensive promotion gives tourists an excuse to celebrate hippy sensibilities, the first astronauts walking on the moon and Woodstock.

But the 10 casinos located in the venerable section of Las Vegas are hoping the 108 days of throwback entertainment result in more visitors to help revive the city’s top industry.

“It’s coming at a time when it plays well,” said Jeff Victor, president of the Fremont Street Experience, the management company in charge of promoting the destination.

Victor said he and others felt Fremont Street didn’t do enough events during the summer.

Fremont Street Experience is spending about $1.7 million on the campaign between the Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, $500,000 more than it normally would during the season. Officials want to increase the share of Sin City visitors that go downtown, less than 3 miles north of the end of the Las Vegas Strip.

Victor said each casino is also making plans to tie to the 1969 theme.

“This economy and Las Vegas in particular requires retail opportunities for visitation, and that’s exactly what this promotion provides,” Victor said. “With people in their 50s and 60s, there is an emotional connection (to 1969).”

Forty years later, Las Vegas finds itself scrambling to reach visitors who are coming less often, spending less money on food and entertainment and not gambling as much.

Visitor volume was down 10 percent for all of Las Vegas for the first two months of this year compared with 2008, according to the latest figures available from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Casinos downtown earned $83.9 million in gambling revenue in January and February, down 17 percent from the first two months of 2008, the tourism agency said. Other casinos in the rest of the county experienced similar declines.

But a recent profile study by the tourism authority showed that 46 percent of Las Vegas visitors in 2008 spent some time downtown during their trip. That was down significantly from 57 percent in 2006, but up from 40 percent in 2007.

The 10 casinos on the Fremont Street Experience have a combined 6,600 hotel rooms _ 4.7 percent of all the hotel rooms in the city.

Victor said the 1969 campaign could be first of several seasonal themes for Fremont Street _ if downtown can pull it off.

“We’ll be checking to see a promotion of this duration is repeatable,” Victor said.
